Choosing support

Social worker or psychologist for counselling?

Both social workers and psychologists may provide counselling. The best fit depends on the practitioner’s qualifications and experience, their way of working, what you want help with and whether you need a particular referral or rebate pathway.

What is the difference in emphasis?

Psychology commonly focuses on thoughts, emotions, behaviour, assessment and evidence-based psychological therapies. Social work counselling also supports emotional wellbeing, with particular attention to the person in their relationships, community and wider social systems.

In practice, individual practitioners vary. A social worker may have extensive therapeutic experience, and two practitioners from the same profession may work very differently. Profession is one useful clue, not the whole answer.

When might social work counselling be a good fit?

It may suit you when distress is tangled with caring roles, family dynamics, disability, health services, work, finances, culture, discrimination, rural access or other real-world pressures. The work can combine emotional processing with practical navigation, boundaries and planning.

Questions worth asking

  • Are your qualifications and professional membership current and verifiable?
  • Do you have experience with the concerns and context I am bringing?
  • What happens in a typical session, and can the pace or format be adapted?
  • What are the fees, cancellation terms and any available rebate or funding pathways?
  • Do I feel respected, understood and able to ask questions?
