Your brain and body are not two separate stories.

You can understand exactly why you feel anxious, shut down or overwhelmed—and still find that your body reacts before your best thinking arrives. That is not a failure of insight. Thought, memory, sensation and automatic survival responses are always influencing one another.

The thinking and reflecting systems

Planning, language, attention and reflection involve networks across the brain, including areas of the prefrontal cortex. Under high stress these capacities can become harder to access—not because they disappear, but because attention and resources shift toward immediate demands.

The amygdala

The amygdala is not simply an “alarm button” or the opposite of rational thought. It is a group of interconnected brain regions involved in emotional learning, relevance and threat-related responses. It works with memory, sensory, cortical and brainstem systems.

The body’s information

Heart rate, breathing, muscle tension, gut sensations, temperature and movement all contribute information. The brain interprets this alongside context and memory. The conversation runs both ways: brain to body and body to brain.

Why insight may not be enough on its own: you can know “I am safe now” while your body remains prepared for what it has learned to expect. Counselling can make room for words and meaning while gently noticing those learned expectations.

The automatic nervous system

Sympathetic and parasympathetic are partners, not enemies.

Sympathetic: energy and mobilisation

The sympathetic branch helps mobilise energy. It can increase alertness, heart rate, sweating and blood flow to muscles. It is active during danger and stress, but also during ordinary movement, exercise, excitement and getting out of bed.

It is not the “bad” system. We need it to act, focus and respond.

Parasympathetic: restoration and maintenance

The parasympathetic branch supports functions including digestion, conservation and recovery. It can slow aspects of heart activity and support quieter bodily processes.

It is not a permanent calm switch. Healthy regulation involves flexible adjustment, and both branches can be active together.

“Fight or flight” and “rest and digest” are useful shorthand, but real nervous-system activity is more complex than a two-position switch.

The vagus nerve

A communication pathway—not a magic reset button.

The vagus nerve is cranial nerve ten and a major part of parasympathetic communication. It carries signals between the brainstem and organs including the heart, lungs and digestive system. Many vagal fibres carry sensory information from the body toward the brain; others influence organ function.

Breathing, voice, sound, movement, connection and attention can affect how a person feels, but online claims that one exercise can “reset,” “heal” or precisely measure the vagus nerve are often much stronger than the evidence allows.

MEB’s approach: experiment gently, notice your own response, keep your agency and stop if a practice increases distress. Regulation is not a performance.

What is my system preparing for?

Not “what is wrong with me?” Try: what demand, memory, sensation or uncertainty might my system be responding to?

What changed just before this?

Notice transitions, sound, light, hunger, pain, a message, a facial expression, a deadline or the moment you finally stopped.

What reduces demand by five per cent?

Not perfect calm. One fewer decision, a supported posture, more time, a familiar sound, a boundary or another person nearby.

Do I need inside or outside attention?

Body awareness can help some people. For others, internal focus intensifies distress. Looking around, naming ordinary objects or listening to familiar sound may be a better starting point.

What does “enough” look like today?

Capacity changes. A smaller task, slower pace or different communication format can be intelligent adaptation rather than avoidance.

What helps the day actually end?

Competence can hide overload. Consider a repeatable transition—change clothes, step outside, wash your hands, play one song or name what can wait.

Low-demand experiments

Orientation, not performing calmness.

  • Visual orientation: let your eyes find three neutral, ordinary things. Notice shape, colour and distance.
  • Physical support: feel the chair, wall, floor or bed doing some of the holding.
  • Predictable sound: listen to a familiar piece of music, ambient sound or a quiet hum if sound feels comfortable.
  • Reduce one demand: physical tiredness does not automatically tell a vigilant system the work is over. Remove one task before demanding relaxation.
  • Breathing only by consent: a slightly longer, comfortable exhale may help some people. If breath focus increases anxiety, choose an external anchor instead.
