Burnout is more than tiredness

Rest does not work when the conditions never change.

Burnout can look like exhaustion, irritability, numbness, dread, brain fog or a body that stays braced even when the day is over. You might still be meeting deadlines, caring for others and appearing competent while the cost becomes harder to hide.

Counselling is not about teaching you to tolerate an impossible load more efficiently. It is a place to understand the pattern: what your nervous system is carrying, which expectations are negotiable, what support is missing and where change can begin without creating another impossible task list.

Signs people often overlook

Burnout does not always announce itself.

You cannot properly switch off

Even during rest, your mind keeps scanning the unfinished work, other people's needs or the next thing likely to go wrong.

Your tolerance has disappeared

Ordinary noise, requests, messages or decisions feel disproportionately difficult because your system has no remaining buffer.

You feel detached from work or people

You may feel cynical, flat, resentful or ashamed that you no longer care in the way you once did.

You are functioning through collapse

You keep delivering, masking or caring while sleep, health, relationships and any sense of yourself are being pushed aside.

What we can work on

A recovery plan built for your actual circumstances.

Map the load

Identify the practical, emotional, relational and systemic pressures involved. Burnout rarely has only one cause.

Reduce nervous-system overload

Use body-aware strategies that help you notice and respond to activation before it becomes total shutdown or collapse.

Make boundaries usable

Develop language, decisions and limits that account for work, family, finances, caring roles and the consequences you actually face.

Reconnect with choice

Work out what must change, what can wait, what support is available and what a sustainable version of responsibility looks like.

Particular experience

Support for people who are usually the support.

Burnout can be especially complicated for social workers, health professionals, leaders, carers, parents and people in rural or remote roles. Confidentiality, professional identity and the fear of letting others down can make it difficult to seek help.

Meg understands helping systems and high-responsibility work. Sessions make room for the emotional impact of the role while staying practical about workloads, ethical pressure, workplace systems, family demands and what is realistically within your control.

Questions

Burnout counselling, without another complicated process.

How do I know if I am burned out?

There is no single experience. Persistent exhaustion, detachment, reduced capacity, dread, irritability, cognitive fog and difficulty recovering can all be relevant. Counselling can help explore what is happening; medical symptoms should also be discussed with your GP.

Do I need to leave my job?

No assumption is made about the outcome. The work is to understand the pressures, increase choice and identify changes that are realistic for your circumstances.

Can helping professionals attend?

Yes. MEB Counselling works with people in caring, clinical and high-responsibility roles. Professional supervision is also available as a separate service.

Can I book without speaking to anyone first?

Yes. You can view availability and book online without a referral or preliminary phone call.
